Ghost Signs, Royal Mile, Edinburgh

Speaking of Ghost signs, I was up in Edinburgh for the weekend. I took some snaps of the faded signs that you get at the entrance to the "closes", extremely narrow streets leading off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.

Ghost Signs

I've always been fascinated by "Ghost Signs". These are old advertising signs, painted straight onto the brick end walls of buildings. They are a real glimpse into how colourful and bright it was during times that we only ever see in black and white photographs. There are plenty of websites devoted to them -

Here are a few I spotted while tootling around.

Down Commercial Street, Spitalfields.

I think this one is near Southgate Road and the canal. I can't exactly remember.

This one is near Petticoat Market.

This is my favourite, Regent Square, WC1.

I really can't remember where this was...the northern Blackwall Tunnel Approach road?

Stoke Newington High Street.

I think this was along the Hackney Road.
